Poems are way to express yourself creatively, through putting your ideas into colorful; or meaningful words. People have been writing poetically for centuries. At, seventeen years of life I have only read a hand full poems. Often I have changed my favorite poem over the years. Right now my favorite poem is “We’re Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks. Gwendolyn Brook’s “We Real Cool” symbolizes death. Reading between the lines is essential to understanding this poem but the most beautiful thing is that it’s says a so much in so little words.
Death it fascinates me. The word scares many people, but not me. It fascinates me because it’s so unpredictable. People decide how to live their life but most people can’t decide when they die. Sometimes it comes knocking on the door when people least except it too. There are different types of death. For instant, some people live a full long life before they die. Others might have their life rip away from them before they can even enjoy the simplest things, like their first love or their first fresh fallen snow. What I find the most interesting about death, is when a human being can causes their own early grave, like suicide or living a very dangerous life style that gets them killed. In the poem “We Real Cool” it describes a group people who live a deadly but entertaining life style. The end result was that, they had an early grave. Brook’s symbolize how living foolishly can cause your early death. That really impresses me but the fact that he incorporated death in his poem made this poem my favorite for that particular day.
Reading between the lines makes reading so much fun. In my opinion reading would be so dull if there was no hinted message or symbolism nowhere to be found in the text. Reading this poem was like, me being a private investigator solving a murder case. In “We Real Cool” I had to read between the lines to interpret the secret meaning behind it. For instant, in “We Real Cool” Brook’s wrote “We thin gin, We Jazz June.” These particular lines took a while to depicher. We thin gin means drinking a lot. I think we Jazz June means a fight broke out or they were smoking weed I still have gotten to the bottom of it yet. Being forced to read between the lines made me fall in love with this poem even more.
24 words are in this poem, and in those 24 words was a powerful message. Poem said a lot without using lots words to make a point. The point of the poem was trying to convey to readers that if you live a foolish life that you’ll die soon. To me short poems have so many more hinted messages. For example, the first line from the poem was “We Left School” leaving school lead up to so many unpleasant things. I love how Brook’s used school as the first line because nothing good can come from dropping out of school.
In conclusion, “We Real Cool’ is my favorite poem right now. Not only does it symbolize death but reading between the lines is crucial to really understand the beauty behind the poem. More importantly Gwendolyn Brooks used 24 words and said so much. That made it even more wonderful because it had so many hinted messages. Gwendolyn Brooks really made me ponder while reading this poem. He made me even more determine to accomplish my dreams and not to waste my life away. To you the readers, I leave you with one last question, what’s the point of living if you did nothing but caused trouble for yourself? Wasting a life is pointless and just plain idiotic. You only get one chance to leave before death consume you whole. Why not give it all you got.
